5 Benefits of Buying Art

There’s a bajillion different ways to decorate your home these days. There’s also a bajillion different ways to be kinder to your wallet when it comes to decorating your home. I for one, don’t see anything wrong with buying commercial art or prints. But I’m also a really big fan of buying original artwork. Buying original artwork has so many benefits including, but not limited to, supporting your local community, small businesses, and fostering ideas and imagination. Here are my top 5 reasons why I do believe everyone should have an original art piece in their home:

  1. BUYING ART DIRECTLY SUPPORTS THE ARTIST

As mentioned above, when you buy an original art piece, you’re directly supporting the artist. You may also be helping support a gallery if you buy an art piece through them. Either way, your purchase is helping support a local artist as well as a local business. That purchase is also telling the artist that their work means something to another person. Their vulnerability, ideas, and hard work is all being noticed.

  2. ART IS ONE OF A KIND

When you buy an original art piece, you’re buying a unique vision, statement, idea and talent. It truly is one of a kind. There’s something somewhat satisfying knowing that you own something that literally no one else has.

  3. IT’S HANDMADE

Just like a handmade table, piece of furniture, blanket or piece of clothing, there’s a certain quality that adds to the piece when you know it hasn’t been mass produced. It’s got a richer story it.

  4. ART INSPIRES

My favorite thing about original art is that it’s moveable, it inspires, and it sets a mood. It inspires serenity, a conversation, an idea, a feeling and an opportunity to escape if even for a few moments.

  5. IT SPEAKS TO YOU

Buy art because it speaks to you. Because it means something to you. It’s something you can share with others or with the artist themselves. It’s a way to connect.

  6. BONUS: IT’S PORTABLE

You can move art around your home as many times as you want. If you have one painting or 10 paintings, I love moving and shifting them around. It changes the mood, the feel and it’s a really fun way to freshen up a room.

When I traveled over seas for the first time, my biggest regret is not buying an original art piece when I was there. I could have brought home a taste of another culture, framed a memory and experience that I most likely will never have again, and to bring home a conversation. Don’t let snobbery make you feel bad if you don’t own an original art piece. Just know that if and when the day or time comes to when you can or want to buy an original art piece, I’m certain you will not regret it.
